Although the Holocaust was one of the darkest moments in human history as the Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, killed an estimated six million Jews, “The View” co-host and liberal commentator, Whoopi Goldberg, decided to present the idea that it had nothing to do with race. The remark from Goldberg came as the daytime show was debating the graphic novel “Maus”, which follows events of the Holocaust using animals, being banned in schools. Although the book has been called into question for containing nudity and inappropriate language, Goldberg was insistent to make it all about race and how the Holocaust had nothing to do with race.

During the taping, Goldberg stated, “The Holocaust isn’t about race.”

That simple line caused even her co-host to stop talking for a second as they appeared stunned. Still Goldberg reiterated, “No, it’s not about race.”

Finally, Joe Behar spoke up, adding, “Well, they considered Jews a different race.”

But still, Goldberg stated again, “It’s not about race.”

When asked what was the Holocaust about, Goldberg insisted, “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about.” Even when her colleagues disagreed, she continued, “You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re Black, or White, cause Black ,White, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.”

The backlash from Goldberg’s statement was massive as Anti Defamation League CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, tweeted, “No @WhoopiGoldberg, the #Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people – who they deemed to be an inferior race. They dehumanized them and used this racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous.”

Goldberg eventually apologized for her statement as even the U.S. Holocaust Museum noted, “Racism was central to Nazi ideology. Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder.”
