As the Russian invasion into Ukraine enters its 12th day of conflict, countries around the world have united around the Ukrainian people and criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for being a bloodthirsty dictator. On Friday, adding his voice to the conversation, Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, admitted there has been a “slippage” in democracies around the world. It appears that the Prime Minister forgot that he was the one to invoke the Emergencies Act against the peaceful protesters who made up the Freedom Convoy.

Speaking on the matter, Trudeau said, “we see a bit of a slippage in our democracies,” with some “turning towards slightly more authoritarian leaders” and “allowing increasing misinformation”. He added these nations have allowed “disinformation to be shared on social media, turning people against the values and the principles of democracies that are so strong.”

Following his statement, Trudeau claimed that the slippage has led to the rise of Putin.

As mentioned above, it wasn’t that long ago that Trudeau was allowing the government to seize the bank accounts of protesters and people who donated to the Freedom Convoy movements. Not to mention, police fashioned with wooden batons and riot gear descended on the protesters, beating and arresting them.

Still, Trudeau continued his narrative that Canada will also stand with Ukraine and for freedom. While that is the current narrative, users online weren’t buying it. Sara Gonzales tweeted, “So…he’s talking about himself?”

Other comments included, “The lack of self-awareness is shocking. #TrudeauTyranny”, “Have you looked in the mirror @JustinTrudeau”, and, “Pot meet kettle”.

Having traveled to the U.K. recently to meet with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte about the current state of Ukraine and what measures need to be taken, Trudeau also visited the Queen for the first time since she contracted COVID-19. While the first time speaking, the Queen met Trudeau once before when he was a child visiting with his father Pierre Trudeau.
