The Oscars might have been battling horrible reviews over the last few years, but thanks to Will Smith, the Academy Awards have been trending for several days. Wondering if the entire exchange was scripted or not, Americans have waited to hear both sides of the story. While award shows are a time for celebration, the show and most of America was stunned and shocked when Smith struck comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife. Now that time has passed and after Smith spent the night partying his Oscar win, he has finally released a statement.

Posting it on Instagram, Smith wrote, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith added, “I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will.”

It should be noted the entire confrontation happened when Rock stated, “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2 movie, can’t wait to see it.”

The academy has been rather silent on the matter, only writing, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
