Over the weekend, the former director of US intelligence lambasted one of the officials who signed the letter casting doubt on Hunter Biden’s laptop, branding him a “fake” and initiating a Twitter spat.

The feud began on Saturday, when Richard Grenell, the former Trump-appointed acting director of national intelligence, objected to a post about ethical behavior among public officials by John Sipher, who retired from the CIA in 2014.

“Didn’t @johnsipher sign a letter warning don’t look into Hunter Biden’s laptop because it’s Russian disinformation three weeks before the 2020 elections?” Grenell sent out a tweet on Saturday. “Now he’s teaching folks on how to behave ethically?! These folks have no remorse……”

The letter, which was signed by 51 former intelligence officials, including Sipher, was published after the New York Post exposed the existence of Biden’s laptop, which he left at a Delaware computer repair shop, in October 2020.

It included a wealth of emails from Biden’s father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, regarding his business activities in China and Ukraine.

Biden was the Democratic presidential contender at the time the report was released.

The dispute between Sipher and Grenell appears to be sparked by a tweet calling for Republicans to suspend the security clearances of all former intelligence community employees who signed the Biden letter if they take control of Congress this year.

The tense exchange continued into Sunday, when Grenell chastised Sipher for signing the letter that incorrectly linked the laptop to Russian disinformation. Sipher was one of the dozens of signatories who declined to react to The Washington Post when asked if they would apologize now that the laptop has been confirmed by the New York Times.

“You signed the letter and then refused to respond to the @nypost. So stop the name calling and answer – is Hunter Biden’s laptop Russian disinformation? ” Grenell tweeted.

He made a second post after that one.

“While I was calling for sanctions on Putin’s pipeline, @johnsipher was saying Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation. You lied. There wasn’t a single piece of intel that suggested it ,” Grenell said in the tweet, linking to a Post editorial seeking a response from Sipher and the others.

“Read the letter,” Sipher said in response to Grenell.

“There are no lies there. The Russians clearly used the issue to damage our country but you and your ilk merely enabled and furthered Russian disinformation. Then again, you will support anything – even lies – to suck up to Trump ,” Sipher posted on twitter.

Grenell countered that he’s “obsessed” with identifying people who “manipulated intelligence for their partisan political gain.”

“*YOU* said Hunter’s laptop was Russian disinformation. You told the public not to take the laptop seriously. You pretended to have seen intel,” he said. “You didn’t even get a briefing!” in Grenell’s post.

“Ha! Says the man who failed to say a word when his boss said he trusted Putin more than his own intelligence community.” Sipher said.

Grenell responded two minutes later.

“Lol. He can run but he can’t hide,” he said. “ He’s a phony. Who lied about intel.”

Grenell posted again a few minutes later.

“Lol. He signed the letter saying Hunter’s laptop was Russian disinformation,” Grenell said.

In response to Grenell’s earlier tweet, Sipher informed him that he would have to block him.

Grenell tweeted, “Look who’s attempting to make a non-issue relevant.”

“Sad. He blocked me over two years ago when he was an official and couldn’t take criticism. I’m gonna have to block him now so he doesn’t misrepresent me to the nut jobs that follow him. Bye Dick. It was fun.”
