Both the Biden administration and the Democrats have seized the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas to revamp their efforts to ban certain assault rifles for being purchased or owned by Americans. But while the Democrats continue to push their agenda, Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday that he would be introducing a plan that will target not only the lack of school safety resources in America, but the growing problem with mental illness.

Although the Democrats might not believe mass shootings to be an issue of mental illness, the World Health Organization admitted that “There has been a 13% rise in mental health conditions and substance use disorders in the last decade (to 2017).” With the WHO stating that mental illness is on the rise, many within the GOP have called for more security at schools.

Adding his voice to the issue, former President Donald Trump discussed mass shooting while attending a rally in Wyoming. Being a massive supporter of the NRA, even Trump stated, “Whatever our differences may be on other issues, what on earth is stopping Democrats from immediately passing measures to ramp up school security.”

Although McConnell claimed he was going to introduce a plan to protect future children and families from the heartache of dealing with such a heinous act of hate, last week he called for a negotiation with the Democrats on gun control. “I’ve encouraged him to talk to Sen. Sinema, Sen. Murphy and others who are interested in trying to get an outcome that’s directly related to the problem. I am hopeful that we could come up with a bipartisan solution that’s directly related to the facts of this awful massacre.”

As for the Democrats, they have been busy preparing eight bills aimed at gun control. They target both ghost guns and bump stocks, as well as many other attachments and assault rifles. According to Breitbart, The bills are listed below.

  • The Raise the Age Act (H.R. 3015, Rep. Anthony Brown of Maryland)
  • Prevent Gun Trafficking Act (H.R. 2280, Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois)
  • The Untraceable Firearms Act (H.R. 3088, Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island)
  • Ethan’s Law (H.R. 748, Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut)
  • The Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act (H.R. 6370, Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan)
  • The Kimberly Vaughan Firearm Safe Storage Act (H.R. 130, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas)
  • Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act (H.R. 5427, Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada)
  • The Keep Americans Safe Act (H.R. 2510, Rep. Ted Deutch of Florida)

On Memorial Day, President Joe Biden focused on gun control, stating, “It makes no sense to be able to purchase something that can fire up to 300 rounds. There’s only one reason to buy a gun that can fire 100 rounds. The Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute.”
