Many states around the country have witnessed a dramatic spike in crime over the last two years. With the Democrats taking a relaxed approach to crime, police officers have become targets as they put themselves in harm’s way each and every day. Sadly, on Thursday morning, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police announced that Officer Truong Thai was killed in the line of duty after he and another officer responded to a domestic disturbance call near University Drive around 1:00 a.m.

According to Sheriff Joe Lombardo, the officer scouted the area and even made contact with the suspect, who was in a car with a weapon. The suspect refused to listen to the officer and ultimately discharged his weapon at them. The officers responded by discharging their weapons as well. Officer Truong Thai was shot in the torso during the altercation. The suspect quickly fled the area as officers rushed Thai to a nearby hospital in critical condition. With the medical staff working to save his life, Thai’s family was able to make it to him before he passed away from his injuries.

As for the suspect, officers located him using a K-9 unit around Desert Inn Road. Again, the suspect refused to cooperate with commands, leading the police to send in the K-9 unit, which was more than enough to detain the gunman. After being placed in custody, the person was identified as 24-year-old Tyson Hampton.

Officer Truong Thai first started his police career back in 1999 and used the past two decades to do more than protect citizens. Colleagues recalled how Thai was a passionate firearms instructor and loved training new officers on ways to keep them safe. The Twitter page for Clark County Nevada wrote, “Clark County joins with the entire community in mourning the death of Officer Truong Thai, following his tragic death in the line of duty while serving and protecting others. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and the entire LVMPD force.”

Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft also took a moment to remember Officer Thai, adding, “Our community and the LVMPD family has suffered a tragic loss of life in the line of duty. I’m devastated for their loved ones, thinking of the men and women of South Central Area Command, and mourning alongside all southern Nevadas. May his memory be a blessing.”
