Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) raised concerns Wednesday regarding the repeated assignment of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to multiple high-profile legal matters involving President Donald Trump.
In a post on X, Schmitt referred to the pattern as a “statistical impossibility” and suggested the process may not be random, as claimed by the court.
“Judge James Boasberg has somehow been assigned FOUR major Trump cases. A statistical impossibility. That isn’t ‘random.’ It’s rigged,” Schmitt posted.

Judge Boasberg currently serves as the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
His assignment to a number of significant cases involving President Trump has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers and observers, who are questioning the transparency and impartiality of the court’s case assignment system.
Among the cases under Boasberg’s oversight is a legal dispute over the use of Signal, an encrypted messaging application, by a senior administration official to discuss military operations.
In March 2025, Judge Boasberg issued an order requiring the preservation of Signal messages exchanged from March 11 to March 15, citing concerns that the app’s auto-delete feature may have violated federal record-keeping laws. The messages reportedly related to a military operation in Yemen.

Another case assigned to Boasberg involves a legal challenge to President Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to expedite the deportation of non-citizens with serious criminal records.
The administration has used the law to remove individuals deemed national security threats or convicted of violent crimes, a move that has drawn opposition from advocacy groups and litigation efforts that have landed in Boasberg’s courtroom.

Following Schmitt’s remarks, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), joined by Reps. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Chip Roy (R-TX), sent a letter to the Clerk of the Court for the District of Columbia requesting details about the case assignment procedures.
The lawmakers stated that the repeated involvement of Judge Boasberg in matters concerning President Trump “raises serious questions about the integrity of the assignment process and the appearance of impartiality.”
The court, in previous statements, has maintained that the assignment of cases is performed randomly and in accordance with standard procedures.
Online reaction to the issue has been divided, with some social media users echoing Schmitt’s concerns.
One user posted, “This judge needs to be disbarred… he is using his power as a judge wrong and this cannot stand!!!”
Another user called on Schmitt to “use his political power” to address the situation through legislative or oversight channels.
Schmitt has not indicated whether he plans to pursue further action beyond his public statement, but his remarks add to growing scrutiny from Republican officials over what they say is a pattern of judicial actions disproportionately affecting President Trump and his administration.
As the matter continues to unfold, it underscores broader tensions between the executive and judicial branches, as well as renewed calls from lawmakers for increased transparency in the federal judiciary’s internal processes.
