Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly drew strong applause at a Turning Point USA campus event on Wednesday after forcefully pushing back on a student who attempted to blame President Donald Trump for the assassination of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

The event took place at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and was the second TPUSA gathering since Kirk’s September death. According to the New York Post, tensions rose during the program when a student accused Trump of fostering rhetoric that led to the killing.

Megyn Kelly speaks in support of Donald Trump during the ‘Make America Great Again Victory Rally’ at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025.

“Why do you support a president who contributes to the rhetoric that got your friend Charlie (Kirk) killed?” the student asked, before citing a Trump rally where the former president declared, “I hate my enemies.” The student attempted to connect those comments to Kirk’s murder.

Kelly immediately rejected the suggestion. “Assumes facts not in evidence. What you said is not true,” she responded.

The student then shouted, “70% of political violence is contributed by Republicans. Look it up! The DOJ just pulled it! They’re delusional!”

Kelly countered, “That’s not true. Once you pull the crazies [out of the study] it is overwhelmingly left-wing violence.”

When pressed again, Kelly clarified her stance to the audience: “Let me take out the first part of the premise of your question, that it was President Trump’s rhetoric that led to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. That is a blatant lie, it’s a defamatory blaspheme, and it’s inappropriate in the setting.”

The exchange continued, with the student attempting to soften his claim by saying Trump had merely “contributed to the political atmosphere.”

Kelly dismissed the point, noting, “Then you have no point. Then your point is utterly empty. ‘Contributing to the atmosphere?’ Let’s just be clear, this guy (Tyler Robinson) was motivated by leftist ideology. We know it from the bullet casings, we know it from the Utah Governor, we know it from his own mother!” The crowd erupted in cheers.

The student then asked whether Trump had incited violence against liberals.

Kelly responded: “The president of the United States has not accepted violence against liberals. The president of United States made a joke at the Charlie Kirk Memorial, which was funny and self-deprecating… It is completely normal for a politician to be thinking about his political fights. And, by the way, Trump has every right to loathe his enemies. They tried to put him in jail for the rest of his life, they tried to bankrupt him, they tried to put his family in jail, and they tried to kill him!”

As the student attempted to bring up Special Counsel Jack Smith, Kelly waved him off, ending the exchange. The audience responded with another round of applause.

The clash underscored the ongoing political debate over Kirk’s assassination. Authorities have said the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, was motivated by left-wing ideology and targeted Kirk because of his political expression.
