Former Vice President Kamala Harris revealed in her newly released memoir that her 2024 presidential campaign had already lined up a White House transition team and prepared to celebrate a victory that never came, as reported by Fox News.
In her book, 107 Days, Harris wrote that she selected Denis McDonough in early October 2024 to serve as her White House chief of staff if she had won the presidency. According to Harris, McDonough accepted the position more than a month before Election Day.

“Denis McDonough had been Barack Obama’s chief of staff in his second term, chief of staff at the National Security Council before that, and had served as secretary of Veterans Affairs in our administration,” Harris wrote.

She added that she viewed McDonough as “a deeply caring man who doesn’t mince words” and believed he would “run a productive and disciplined West Wing.”
McDonough previously served as President Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff from February 2013 to January 2017 and as Principal Deputy National Security Advisor from October 2010 to January 2013.
He was most recently Secretary of Veterans Affairs under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Harris recalled meeting McDonough during her time as vice president, noting that one of her first public appearances included him.

“It was the height of COVID. He and his wife, Karin, and Doug and I took heart-shaped cookies to the nurses at the VA hospital on Valentine’s Day. The son of Irish immigrants, one of eleven children, he taught school in Belize before coming to work in government,” Harris wrote.
While transition planning was underway, Harris admitted that her campaign did not plan for the outcome that ultimately unfolded. “We’d planned for everything, it seemed, except the actual result,” she wrote.
The former vice president said her campaign prepared for several scenarios, including a contested result, a drawn-out count, or unrest following the election. She wrote that her team even considered the possibility that President Trump might claim victory in Pennsylvania before the vote was final.

Despite those considerations, Harris admitted her campaign was not prepared for defeat. She detailed how her social secretary, Storm Horncastle, had stocked champagne and ordered cupcakes decorated with the words “Madame President” for Election Night.

Once it became clear she had lost, Horncastle “quietly went to the kitchen and hid all signs of celebratory preparation. She painstakingly peeled icing that read ‘Madame President’ off the top of each cupcake. Having converted them to innocuous comfort food, she sent them out, along with more wine, in case people needed it,” Harris wrote.
Harris’ 2024 campaign, launched after Biden exited the race on July 21, 2024, lasted just 107 days, making it the shortest modern presidential campaign. President Donald Trump ultimately won the election with 312 electoral votes, compared to Harris’ 226.
McDonough has not publicly commented on Harris’ revelations, according to Fox News Digital.
